Cover letter with no experience: a simple formula
How to write a convincing cover letter as a student or first-time job seeker, with a structure you can adapt in ten minutes.
Structure that always works
Four short paragraphs: (1) the role you are applying for and one strong reason you are a fit, (2) proof from studies, volunteering or projects, (3) why this employer specifically, (4) a confident close.
Open with the role and a hook
"I am applying for the summer role as a store assistant. I have worked with customers in a busy school cafeteria and I am used to keeping calm when things get hectic." Simple, specific, honest.
Use real examples, not adjectives
Anyone can write "hard-working". Instead, tell one short true story: "During exam season I organised a study group of 8 students and we all passed." Stories are remembered; adjectives are not.
Turn everyday experience into work skills
Babysitting shows responsibility. A sports team shows teamwork. Helping in a family shop shows customer contact. Pick two things and connect them to the job ad's requirements.
Show you did your homework
Mention one specific thing about the company — a product, a value, a recent opening — and why it appeals to you. Two sentences are enough.
Close warmly and correctly
Thank the reader, say you would happily come for an interview, and sign with your name and contact details. Check the spelling of the company name — a small detail that many applicants miss.
